Two cops search for a mysterious crystal with healing powers to cure a sick old man. On the trail they come up against a team treasure hunter/smugglers with impressive combat skills and big guns.
OK, here is another one of Yen&#39;s movie performances, and from the reviews I noticed that they all compare it to either Tiger Cage 2 or ITLOD4.<br/><br/>Look at the fact here people, number 1 this movie has a completely different story from both of those movies, where as Tiger Cage 2 and ITLOD 4 are somewhat similar.<br/><br/>To sum up the story of Crystal Hunt, there is a crystal everyone wants that can cure a disease. Greedy gangsters want is for money, but Carrie Ng wants it to cure her father, Yen plays a retired cop whom now does circus performances. He helps out in the search for the crystal as well.<br/><br/>They run into some serious situations on the way from azz kickings to even violent deaths. The hinchmen spare no expense to cruelty and the hero(s) have some really hard times, trying to find the crystal. In the end everything starts to jump off, the hinchmen and the heros have a showdown for the crystal. What I didn&#39;t understand is how Yen and Sibelle goes to jail for all of this.<br/><br/>I won&#39;t lie and tell you that I wasn&#39;t upset at the fact that 2 of the world&#39;s best kickers did not engage in serious combat. Ken Lo really should have been Donnie Yen&#39;s opponent, not John Salvitti (although he was awesome in the film). That really hurt my feelings, but back on hand the ending fight scenes were good. One being the worst result of getting kicked into a tree that I have ever seen. That scene alone is worth looking at over and over.<br/><br/>In closing this is not a bad film, but compared to a lot others it could have been better, but it is again worth checking out.
If you&#39;re somewhat of a Donnie Yen fan and film completionist, there&#39;s probably not much I can say to stop you from seeing this movie as you&#39;re going to check it out regardless. That darn curiosity. After In The Line of Duty 4 and Tiger Cage 2 (two of my top 10 martial arts movies), it&#39;s hard to watch the cast of Donnie Yen, John Salvitti and the mighty Micheal Woods go to waste under the weight of an unimpressive direction and small budget. There&#39;s no heart or real effort put in this movie. <br/><br/>With a title like &#39;Crystal Hunt&#39; you might expect or hope an action-adventure movie perhaps in the style of Jackie Chan&#39;s &#39;Armor of God&#39; but all the actual adventuring is comprised of a short mountain hike near the end of the movie. The rest of the &#39;hunt&#39; is mostly comprised of uninspired foot-chases and shoot-outs, and then the titular &#39;crystal&#39; isn&#39;t even relevant yet! As for the crystal, it&#39;s supposed healing powers are never explained or shown. So, what was the point? Oh yes and you&#39;re probably interested in at least the fighting? It&#39;s just not very good. While Donnie is in good form as always, the choreography and set-ups aren&#39;t really to write home about. If you&#39;re going to see this movie to cross that entry of your Donnie Yen list, just make sure it&#39;s on a lazy Sunday afternoon; don&#39;t make it the highlight of your evening. Because it won&#39;t be very shiny. Probably also skip &#39;Cheetah on Fire&#39;, it&#39;s in the same boat as this movie. If you&#39;re really interested in checking out some earlier low-budget Yen movies, I&#39;m recommending The Holy Virgin vs The Evil Dead. It&#39;s very silly but I found it to be way more entertaining then this one. Plus, that flick arguably has the best tracking shot in movie history (those who&#39;ve seen the movie know what I&#39;m talking about).
